How did you get started doing what you do?
I was working in an advertising studio, fricking out on my sense of guilt. I left and right away got hired to illustrate a book. I know what you’re gonna say, but that’s no proof god exists.
How would you describe your creative style?
Anal. But not by choice.
What’s your inspiration?
Projects and people that have a questioning attitude/positive impact on society and individuals. Paying my rent is also a critical incentive.
What is art to you?
The definition depends on how open minded you are. I’m kind of average so I’d say the abstract or material projection of a concept or emotion onto an external object/situation/behavior and so on.
How long does it typically take for you to finish a piece?
The challenging part is understanding when it’s finished.
How do you keep motivated?
Have you ever listened to Cumbia really loud? It has nothing to do with salsa by the way.
What do you hope to accomplish with your work?
Eradicate inequality. You said hope.
How have others reacted to your work?
For some reason my friends and family have a very vague idea about what it is exactly that I do. Just the other day my mom whatsapp-ed me to ask if I was a web designer.
What do you want others to take away from your work?
This: “lol, if she can do it I can do it too!”
What, if anything, would you tell your younger self?
Talent is a trap and being able to follow your principles is a privilege.
What’s the best advice you’ve been given?
“Turn you pants inside-out when you don’t have clean ones” was a life saviour. But also “Turn off the computer and go to bed, it’s not a cure for cancer you’re working on” is really climbing the advise chart.
Any words of wisdom to aspiring artists who want to pursue a similar career?
Yes please!
What’s your process like?
Imagine ping pong. I’m not very good at it in real life. But the metaphor is perfect because it’s all in my head and nobody can see me cheating. Often there are too many balls. Sometimes the bats are floppy and stinky. But if I get bored I can leave the room and come back when the game is over, and let my subconscious do the work while I hang my laundry. It really works.
How could the art industry become better in your opinion?
You mean the white man art industry?
