Tell us about yourself, who are you, where are you from, and what do you do?
My Name is Mike Mcdonnell. I’m from Thornhill, Ontario, I’m an Aquarius, and I’m an artist practicing mostly in drawing and GIF animation at the moment.
How did you get started doing what you do?
I was always drawing. It was the thing I did at every job I ever had (and usually got fired for) or class I was ever in so it seemed like the right choice- the path of least resistance.
How would you describe your style?
I’m not exactly sure, its definitely comic book inspired and a lot of anatomical and diagrammatic drawing styles are referenced.
There are a lot of pop culture and fashion references. Sort of whatever I see that strikes my fancy. Neo constant digestiveism.
What’s your inspiration?
Anything around me: music, movies, people, shitty day, good day, cute dogs, great sandwich etc.
What does your typical day look like?
Shower, eat, draw, smoke, eat, bed.
How long does it typically take for you to finish a piece?
Depends, could be a couple days or a couple of hours
How do you keep motivated?
A crippling fear of failure.
How have your surroundings influenced your work?
It depends. I don’t work that well at home, I need to get out and go somewhere like drawing is an escape in a ways so I kind of like to set it up like I shouldn’t be drawing somewhere and I get away with it.
What do you hope to accomplish with your work?
That I could just make my work and be comfortable.
How have others reacted to your work?
It’s a mixed bag. Some people are like, “oh that’s nice” or “what the fuck is wrong with you?”
What, if anything, would you tell your younger self?
All the outcomes of major sporting events so I COULD BET ON THEM AND BE STACKING CASH.
What’s the best advice you’ve been given?
What’s your dream project?
Well last night my dream project was about an ice fishing hole in an old house, like in the floor and it was summer and my friend caught this fish and the fish started talking and was like, let me go! And I was like, yo let that fish go man! And he was like, naw you see the size of that fish. He couldn’t hear the fish though, only I could, so he thought I was fucking crazy and it threw our friendship into disarray.
What art supplies do you use?
These pens from my old work. I took like a thousand of them.
How could the art industry become better in your opinion?
They bought my work.
Any other artists that you would like to recommend for others to check out as well?
Keiran Brent, Vanessa Maltese, Youri Makovski, Shanna Van Maurik, Erin Loree, Lauren Pelc-Macarthur, Hannah Epstien, Kristy Gordon… There are more for sure and p.s. if I spelled your name wrong, forgive me, I think you’re all awesome!
