Artist Interview: Fabienne Jenny Jacquet – Painter

Painting by Fabienne Jenny JacquetToday, we’d like to welcome Fabienne Jenny Jacquet to Jung Katz.

Tell us about yourself, who are you, where are you from, and what do you do?
I am a painter born in France and based in London, UK. I studied fine arts at Central Saint Martins College. Since graduating in 2008, I have worked at building up my art practice, with a focus on painting and drawing, and taken part in various exhibitions all over the UK.

How did you get started doing what you do?
I’ve always loved drawing as a kid. Art and music became my way of expressing myself as an adult.

Painting by Fabienne Jenny JacquetWhat’s your inspiration?
Usually it’s about mixing personal experiences with references of music, sci-fi and horror films, popular culture icons and comics. I like distorting figures, faces, and animals  to create weird, wonky characters. There isn’t a big game plan though, most of my works are ‘happy accidents’ that take a life of their own.

What is art to you?
As essential as breathing and a coping mechanism.

Painting by Fabienne Jenny JacquetHow do you keep motivated?
An endless supply of chocolate and a good CD collection.

What’s the best advice you’ve been given?
Never stop producing work, that’s the worst thing you can do.

Painting by Fabienne Jenny JacquetAny words of wisdom to aspiring artists who want to pursue a similar career?
Find your own style; exhibit as much as you can; learn from others; be professional when dealing with people; Don’t be discouraged when something doesn’t go as planned as other opportunities will present themselves.

What are your thoughts on art school?
Too much talking and not enough doing…

Painting by Fabienne Jenny JacquetWhat art supplies do you use?
I tend to use a lot of water-mixable oil paints. Ink and pencils for drawings.

How could the art industry become better in your opinion?
It’s still a bit about ‘who you know ‘ to a certain degree which can be off-putting.

The Internet and social media are changing the rules of the game though and opening things up.

Painting by Fabienne Jenny JacquetAny other artists that you would like to recommend for others to check out as well?
