Tell us about yourself, who are you, where are you from, and what do you do?
My name is Emily Evans, I’m originally from Yorkshire but have been living in London since I graduated from London Collage of Communication. I work in collage, mainly using photocopies. I love textures  and  strange dark stories.  I dream of owning my own photocopier!  I also sometimes work on large scale wall paste-ups of my collages. I really enjoy working big!

How did you get started doing what you do?
During University I mainly worked in collage and its something I continued to do, I like the symbolism you can create using collage, I also like to mix painting with my collage and often stain my photocopies with Gouache. I  just really like getting messy and using my hands,  and I never felt much in love with drawing. I do doodle now and then for when I’m working on a book or series so I can plan my collages.  Over the last couple of years I have become more interested in creating my own collage materials so blowing up patterns textures shapes etc. and using these to make collages rather than using direct cut outs. I draw with the cut outs more if that makes sense. I have a whole series I hope to bring out soon which are just purely made from my own catalog of textures. At Uni I worked on quite large scale pieces but it wasn’t till recently I started working like that again, I really enjoy it, I  really enjoy the process of pasting  directly onto a wall.

Textures and at the moment sci -fi books. I am always inspired by dark stories, and in retrospect watching The league of Gentlemen when I was younger and other similar dark humour really inspired me now. I find weird dark stories very fascinating. I also really like psychology and the ideas of what shapes our society very interesting.  Most of the Sci- fi I like crosses over into dark analysis of the psyche. Also horror films such  as the Wickerman and the KillList, strange stories, belief and communities.

How do you keep motivated?
I try to keep researching. I recently did a collage project for the Peabody Trust and I took the group to a local Archive.  I find the research very motivating. Generally as a rule getting away from all computers, phones etc. and looking in books really helps me, or just getting out of the studio for a bit.

My dream project at the moment would be taking over a whole space with my paste-ups, they are based around dystopian futures and I would love to cover a whole space with them so the stories could control the space.

What art supplies do you use?
Lots of this painters and decorators tape that is silly expensive (well for tape) its really really low tack so when I paint on top of my collages it doesn’t damage them.

I worked with the artist Lakwena and she is AMAZING! her vision is so interesting. I really admire her work and her dedication to such a beautiful narrative that runs through her pieces. Her use of typography is just perfect.

I also recently got introduced to Joshua Hughes-Games, I love that his work is so dark. I really like his aesthetic, it’s pretty dark  and he uses line really well.
