Interview: Nathan Twomey – Illustrator and Interdisciplinary Designer

Tell us about yourself, who are you, where are you from, and what do you do?
“Hello, my name is Nathan Twomey and I am from Youghal…it’s in Ireland..I am an Illustrator/Interdisciplinary Designer, recently graduated from LSAD Limerick School of Art & Design. Currently living and freelancing in Bremen, Germany.”

How did you get started doing what you do?
“I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t into art, as a kid I had this thing where I had to take paper and drawing materials with me everywhere I went. But as for doing it professionally, I kind of came into it knowing where I wanted to end up, designing for music, and I always knew I wanted to go to art college, so studying graphic design in LSAD made sense to me. Of course in the time I spent there my interests grew far beyond strictly creating work for music, but you can’t forget that original spark!”

What’s your inspiration?
“Inspiration for me comes from so many places. Naturally music plays a huge part in my work, but outside of that I always find myself inspired when I’m cycling in the countryside. Flea markets are great for hidden treasure too, I love going to flea markets on the weekends and searching for random source material, jumping off points for new projects.”

What is art to you?
“Art to me as a creator is expression in its purest form, especially when it comes to working on illustrations. I never feel more in tune than when i’m in the room with the giant piece of paper on the wall and the never ending playlist and I can just go. Consequently Art to me as an appreciator is pure beauty.”

What do you hope to accomplish with your work?
“I want to expand horizons, eventually those that matter outside my head but at the moment, my own.”

What, if anything, would you tell your younger self?
“Get rid of the pink hair you look ridiculous.”

What’s the best advice you’ve been given?
“My dad once said to me ‘if it works, it’s already dated’…pretty sure he stole that one from Bowie though.”

Any words of wisdom to aspiring artists who want to pursue a similar career?
“If you’re working on something that nobody else gets, keep going because your probably on to something.”

What are your thoughts on art school?
“I studied at the Limerick School of Art & Design and I really loved my time there, from a very young age I knew I wanted to go to art college so everything I did in school was aimed in that direction..i.e. skipping days so I could build my portfolio. And I got there at a very young age, I wasn’t even of the legal age to drink for the first few months! I spent 4 years there studying Visual Communication and in that time what learned was absolutely necessary for me to end up where I am now, I don’t believe that my work would be at the level it is if I didn’t go there, and that evidence is undeniable  when I look back at that original portfolio. What I liked most about LSAD was that it was a small enough place with 6 different disciplines, painting, print, ceramics, fashion, sculpture and graphics. So there was never a shortage of talent, interesting people and inspiration! and this variety lead to collaborating between the different disciplines which is always fun.”

Have any future aspirations that you’d like to share?
“I do aspire to establish myself as a full-time freelancer, I want to be in a position where I have too much stuff to do!

I am currently working on a series of large scale illustrations which I hope to develop into my first solo exhibition, but that won’t be for a time yet, this is one of those open ended, not strings attached, just for fun projects.”

What’s your dream project?
“Designing a record sleeve for an artist that has inspired me in the past.”

What art supplies do you use?
“Indian ink, brushes, pencilcs, pens, scanners, photocopiers, glue, craft knife, spray paint!”

Any other artists that you would like to recommend for others to check out as well?
“Definitely check out Leif Podhajsky’s Visual Melt Blog, it’s a rich collection of some inhuman talent! And check out the work from some of my friends who recently graduated from LSAD too, Kelly Igoe and Lorna Heneghan.

You can also check out other work from the Vis Com course here on the graduate list.”
