Artist Interview: Ander Quinn – Digital Artist

Ander Quinn
Tell us about yourself, who are you, where are you from, and what do you make?
“I’m Ander Quinn and I’m originally from Detroit. I lived in NYC for twelve years and I now live in Los Angeles. My work is predominantly created digitally, and is usually some type of photography or graphic design or a combination of both.”

How did you get started making the type of art you make?
“I’ve enjoyed making things for as long as I can remember. My family always had a lot of cameras around. My brother and I started taking pictures together at a very young age.”

Ander Quinn
What’s your inspiration?
“Lately, my inspirations have been leaning toward two of my favorite masters of abstraction Aaron Siskind and Gerhard Richter. I’m blown away by their work. It makes me wanna run out and make something.”

How do you keep motivated?
“Motivation has always been a tough one for me. I either have it or I don’t. I can be a big procrastinator. I find if I’m stuck or blocked just sitting down and creating can get me through it. The act of working everyday is a big one. The momentum of regularly activity keeps the juice flowing. For the last year or so I’ve been lucky and very motivated. It feels great.”

What are your thoughts on art school?
“I think lifelong learning is essential and college is an invaluable part of that process. I went to two highfalutin schools; RISD for undergrad and CalArts for grad school. I learned a lot and it greatly improved my outlook, but I wasted a lot of time while in was there. If I had to do it again, I’d focus and work all the time. But, I’m not a fan of the mountain of debt I have due to my student loans.”

What’s the best advice you’ve been given?
“A wise woman once told me “Treat it like a job” when she was discussing being an artist.”

Ander Quinn
Have any future aspirations that you’d like to share?
“I’d love to be successful enough to quite my job and travel the world generating and showing my art.”

  1. Ander – your future aspirations in relation to being able to quit your job, travel the world to generate and show your art…wow…wouldn’t that be amazing. You could make a small start with just one trip and build on it from there! Perhaps you have already started this approach? I am a great believer in ‘taking the first step’ and have been constantly amazed at what can happen…give it a go…maybe your aspirations will be realized…Karen
