Artist Interview: Joey Fourr – Musician & Doodler

Joey Fourr
Tell us about yourself, who are you, where are you from, and what do you make?
“i am Joey , i am from london , i make music , videos , doodle , run a riso printing studio called Crumb Cabin and like screen-printing when i can .”
How did you get started making the type of art and music you make?
“as a kid i was gripped by this book and thought it was the coolest book ever and wanted to live in the pages , this led to an obsession with doodles and being excited by the doodle aesthetic over the photo-real style that talented , skilled artist peoples are able to create .
i started writing music for JOEY FOURR after losing my mind in a previous band , i really didn’t want to touch the guitar ever again but ended up writing a record without distortion and feeling kinda happy . but for some reason i thought it would make sense to write songs in similar sound to what i was listening to when i was 14 and returned to distorted guitar only to then grow tired of the sounds and angst inherent in the style and now finding happiness being soaked in clean , wet guitar tones and repetitive bass grooves .
now also JOEY FOURR has 2 members contributing to the recording process which is pretty neat , i like it , i am truly excited to record an album of where i’m at now ARGH ! i can’t wait for people to hear ! !!”

How have others responded to your work
“a lot of shoulder-shrugging up and the edge of their mouths being pulled down .”

How do you keep motivated?
“by listing in my head all the things i am currently doing and have dun and then imagine being dead and how disappointed my dead self would be with my alive self if all the things i have dun and currently am doing is all have to show for this as an entire life spent creating things . eurgh ! makes me feel so sick with myself .”

“world peace”
What, if anything, would you tell your younger self?
“you can move radiators”
What’s the best advice you’ve been given?

Any words of wisdom to aspiring artists who want to pursue a similar career?
if it’s a career you’re looking for we’re not going to be friends
What are your thoughts on art school?
“you’re either gonna make friends who will shape you into someone your parents won’t recognise when you return home or you’ll hate everyone on your course, drop out and become someone your parents won’t recognise when you return home .”
What’s your dream project?
“i just really like writing songs .”
What art supplies/musical equipment do you use?
“art supplies / pencils , a ruler , fineliner pens , posca pens , whatever paper scraps i can find , a scanner , photoshop .
